The Slippery Critic

Critics manifest themselves as both outer and inner figures. This could be someone giving you a hard time or simply you, beating yourself up. The first step to dealing with a critic is to become aware of it.

Inner critics are especially slippery characters trying to sell you their monopoly on knowledge. Your critic is not you, not the whole you, with it rarely having anything of value to say. Separate it and what it has to say. Stick it in a chair if necessary and give yourself some space.

When a critic is seen for what it is, it loses power. Generally it only wants someone to listen, and its view of you and the world seldom work. So switch it off and get on with what it is that you are really here to do!
